Having worked with thousands of HR professionals—from Fortune 100 companies to small family businesses—I’ve heard countless stories you can’t imagine, and I’m just scratching the surface.

I can assure you, HR handles far more than most people realize. Here’s a glimpse into the life of an HR person…

  1. They hear “this is confidential” more times in a week than most people do in a whole year.
  2. They coach managers on giving feedback that doesn’t lead to resignation.
  3. They manage investigations that feel like detective work, without the cool music.
  4. They explain that “hostile work environment” isn’t the same as “my coworker annoys me.”
  5. They sit in meetings and mediate between two grown adults.
  6. They remind managers that “brilliant but toxic” is still toxic.
  7. They help some people prepare for a tough conversation, and others to recover from it.
  8. They get called into meetings five minutes before they start, with the phrase “quick question.”
  9. They listen to workplace drama that could be a storyline on The Office.
  10. They translate executive decisions into language that won’t spark panic.
  11. They help new hires understand a culture nobody ever documented.
  12. They coach leaders on how to apologize sincerely.
  13. They field questions that could have been answered by reading the first paragraph of the handbook.
  14. They protect the company, the employee, and the relationship between them—all at the same time.
  15. They get pulled into situations that seem too wild to be real, but they actually are.

And through it all, they’re expected to stay calm, objective, and somehow not take any of it home.

So, the next time you see an HR professional looking frazzled, remember they’re handling issues no one will ever hear about, earning little appreciation, and carrying stories they can’t share.
