Many of us don’t act the same at work as we do at home.
That’s not hypocrisy. It’s adaptation. Different settings reward different traits, so we lean into what works.
The qualities that earn praise in the office can create tension in the kitchen. I know this well. Delegation drives results in a staff meeting. It lands differently when you try it in your own house. 😉
During the pandemic, when couples suddenly shared workspace, I heard the same comment again and again: “I’m listening to my spouse on Zoom calls and I have no idea who this person is.”
You know the home version of your partner. Welcome to the work version of them.
It’s basic psychology to display behaviors that get rewarded. When we do something and it strengthens a relationships or produce results, we do it again. Over time, these traits grow stronger because our environment reinforces them.
But sometimes, the very traits that earn high marks in a performance review create tension at home. The same trait can be a superpower in one setting and a strain in another.
I represent the DISC styles using four birds: Eagle (D), Parrot (I), Dove (S), and Owl (C).
🦅 The Eagle at Work and at Home
In the office, the Eagle’s decisiveness drives momentum. They delegate clearly, set direction, and make quick decisions. Teams appreciate the clarity. Results follow.
At home, that same decisiveness can come off as abrupt. A quick, confident “Here’s where we are going to dinner” feels different when no deadline or hierarchy. Making fast decisions keeps projects moving at work. At the kitchen table, it can sound like I’m running a staff meeting instead of having a conversation.
🦜 The Parrot at Work and at Home
At work, the Parrot’s enthusiasm boosts collaboration. They bring energy to the team, ignite ideas, and connect people who might otherwise stay in their lanes. The culture improves because they are present.
At home, the constant need for stimulation can exhaust other family members. If the car ride falls quiet, the Parrot fills it with conversation, a story, or road trip activity. How many different state license plates can we find? In a relationship, Parrots may need to realize that not every moment requires commentary.
🕊 The Dove at Work and at Home
In the workplace, Doves are the glue. They smooth conflict, support colleagues, and sense emotional undercurrents before anyone else does. They build trust that keeps teams intact during pressure.
At home, that same harmony-seeking instinct can turn into overprotection. The Dove steps in quickly, smooths the path, and fixes the problem. It comes from love. Yet in doing so, they can shield others from the very discomfort that helps them grow.
🦉 The Owl at Work and at Home
Owls bring diligence to the office. They analyze data, ask thoughtful questions, and prevent costly mistakes. Their precision builds confidence across the organization.
At home, that organized mindset can sometimes feel like overthinking. Not every dinner conversation needs a fact check. Not every part of home life requires strict guidelines, like stacking the dishwasher or rules about doing laundry.
Environment Shapes Expression
Organizational culture emphasizes certain traits. Some companies reward boldness and speed, while others value meticulous planning. Some celebrate visibility and charisma, whereas others prioritize collaboration.
You adapt because you want to succeed.
At home, the reward system is different. Connection matters more than efficiency, presence outweighs performance, and listening is more important than leading. When we forget this, tension increases.
Personality Intelligence is the ability to recognize what’s needed in the moment. The question isn’t, “Who am I?” but rather, “What does this person or situation require?”
